It pays to know less expensive substitutes of your favorite premium brand. Bartender Jason Bran goes through the numbers and illustrates how it might make sense for some consumers to switch to a call or well brand of a lower tier.
Are you an unsuspecting consumer? Have you ever answered, “I don’t know” when asked to specify a brand? Better yet, after specifying the brand have you said, “will do” or “I guess”? If these scenarios apply to you, chances are that you are spending more than necessary on [your] nights out.
I don't think all consumers are universally brand conscious. By that, I mean that a consumer can care about their whiskey but not care about their gin. Similarly, tastes can learn toward more of the edge cases. For instance, my favorite Irish whiskey is Redbreast (a premium brand) but my second favorite is the lower tier Powers.
