While LA's beer scene has a long way to go before it can match San Diego and Santa Barbara, the rise in beer cocktails is a healthy indicator. It means that there's enough variance and availability (and creativity). Beer havens like Portland and Denver have already been doing this, and it bodes well that LA's palate is eager to follow suit. The LA Times has a look at beer cocktails in LA.
Novel mixtures of beer, gin, vodka, whiskey, juices, infusions and herbs, beer cocktails are pouring two of the city's most hedonistic obsessions — craft beer and mixology — into a single glass, one that showcases the properties of fine beer rather than shunting it to the side as just another ingredient.
In addition to the ones mentioned in the article, Big Bar in Los Feliz, The Parish in Downtown, and 320 Main all have beer cocktails on the menu. Caña's new fall menu even features a whole subsection devoted to it.
